10 Must See Ballet Performances

Throughout the history, classical ballet has been known to invigorate romantic stories in a staggering way and to make the audience experience magnificent emotions. General education include knowledge of classical art. Whether you’re a ballet enthusiast or you’ve never seen a ballet performance, here are 10 must see ballet performances that you should see.

1. Swan Lake

Swan Lake is a ballet that everyone has heard about. It presents an ageless tale. A beautiful young woman Odette, has been cursed by a sorcerer called Von Rothbart. She is the Swan Queen during the day, and she turns into a human at night, which is when she meets Prince Siegfried, composed by famous Russian composer Tchaikovsky and it was choreographed by Julius Reisinger in 1875. Premiered in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia.

2. The Nutcracker

The Nutcracker has become a Christmas tradition for many people, and children enjoy it as much as adults do. Telling the story of a young girl Clara, who shrinks to the tiny size of a mouse and her nutcracker toy goes to war against the evil Mouse King. Like the Swan Lake, The Nutcracker was also composed by Tchaikovsky, and choreographed by great artists Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. 

3. Giselle

Giselle is a story of a beautiful young woman named Giselle, who dies of a broken heart after she finds out that the man she loves is n fact a nobleman named Duke Albrecht, and that they could never be together. Giselle’s spirit eventually saves her loves life and that allows her soul to rest in peace. This famous piece was composed by Adolph Adam, and choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot. 

4. Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet are young lovers who choose to die since they are not allowed to live together. Romeo and Juliet was composed by Sergei Prokofiev, and although many different versions of the ballet have been created, the ballet was first choreographed by Ivo Váña-Psota and it premiered at the Mahen Theatre in Czechoslovakia in 1938. 

5. Don Quixote

Don Quixote was inspired by the famous story written by Miguel de Cervantes. Don Quixote is a romantic character who decides to escape the  reality, and he encounters various adventures in his fantasy world where he believes he is a knight searching for his love Dulcinea, composed by Ludwig Minkus, and it was choreographed by Marius Petipa. Don Quixote premiered at the Ballet of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1869.

6. Cinderella

Cinderella is a tale written by Charles Perreault. A beautiful young woman Cinderella, who is constantly humiliated by her step-mother and her step-sisters, is visited by her fairy godmother. The fairy grandmother gives her a beautiful dress and glass slippers to weat to the ball, where she meets the prince. Cinderella was composed by Sergei Prokofiev, and choreographed by Rostislav Zakharov.  

7. La Bayadère

La Bayadère is an alluring tale of a temple dancer Nikiya, and her warrior lover Solor. They have sworn fidelity to each other, but the High Brahmin decided for Nikiya to be his. She is eventually killed, but she is reunited with Solor in the afterlife. La Bayadère was composed by Ludwig Minkus and choreographed by Marius Petipa. Ballet premiered  in Saint Petersburg in 1877 at the Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre.

8. Coppélia

Coppélia is a comic ballet about a young man Franz, who falls in love with a life-size mechanical doll created by Dr. Coppelius. Dr. Coppelius is looking for a human sacrifice to make his doll come to life, but Swanhilda, who was supposed to marry Franz, manages to save her lover. Coppélia was originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon to music composed by Léo Delibes, and this famous ballet premiered in Paris at the Salle Le Peletier in 1870.

9. The Sleeping Beauty

Well known Sleeping Beauty is based on another tale written by Charles Perreault. Princess Aurora is cursed by the evil fairy Carabosse. Declaring that at the age of 16 years old, the princess will prick her finger on a spindle and die. Fortunately, a good fairy alters the curse so Aurora will fall asleep instead. The Sleeping Beauty is another ballet that was composed by Tchaikovsky and it was choreographed by Marius Petipa. Saint Petersburg wash the place of premiere performance in 1890 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre.
